Post Office in Budget 2026

Post Office transformation features in the Budget 2026.

Budget 2026: Chancellor Backs Modernisation of Post Office Branches Across the Country

The Chancellor has backed the continued transformation of the Post Office network, with 600 branches set to receive upgrades by the end of the financial year.

Post Office is also aiming to roll out up to 1,000 new multi-carrier self-service Drop Boxes by the end of the financial year. Postmasters will have the opportunity to bring the new technology into their branches, reducing their costs and giving customers greater choice and flexibility when sending parcels.

The investment will help create more accessible and welcoming branches, make transactions simpler and strengthen the role of Post Office branches at the heart of high streets and communities.

Post Office Minister Kate Dearden said:

“Postmasters make a vital contribution to their communities, supporting local businesses and keeping essential services at the heart of high streets across the country.

“Through nearly £500 million of backing for Post Office Plus and investment in new technology like Drop Boxes, we are helping postmasters offer even more to their customers, creating a stronger, more modern and sustainable Post Office that can serve businesses and communities for years to come.”

The Budget announcements come alongside the Government’s new strategy to champion the UK’s high streets, Hope on the High Street, which highlights the expansion of Post Office Plus.

Post Office Plus is transforming selected branches into modern community hubs. The format enables trusted organisations to provide face-to-face support alongside existing Post Office services, including help with household costs, connectivity, bereavement and digital skills.

The first two Post Office Plus locations are open in Barnsley and Derby. A further eight locations are planned by the end of 2026, including Bishop’s Stortford, Chesham, Loughborough, Palmers Green, Plymouth, Sheffield, Wellingborough and Sevenoaks.

Most of these branches will be operated by independent postmasters, helping them diversify their businesses, respond to local needs and bring additional services and activity onto the high street. Post Office intends to open up to a further 20 locations by the end of March 2027.

Welcoming the Government’s Budget announcements, Neil Brocklehurst, Post Office CEO, said: “It’s clear that the Government continues to back the Post Office network – both through the Budget and its new strategy to champion the UK’s high streets.

“As part of his Budget, the Chancellor announced that Post Office is upgrading 600 branches and aiming to roll out up to 1,000 new multi-carrier self-service Drop Boxes by the end of the financial year. Postmasters will now have the opportunity to bring the new technology into their branches, reducing their costs and giving customers greater choice and flexibility.

“Together with the expansion of Post Office Plus, highlighted in the high street strategy, this investment will strengthen the role our branches play at the heart of communities across the country. Our modernised branches will offer customers greater convenience and create new opportunities for growth in every postcode by supporting the services that local businesses rely on.

“The additional business rates support announced today for small businesses is also welcome news. Business rates relief for post offices is something that we have been campaigning for, on behalf of our postmasters. This is a first step in the right direction and we will continue our conversations on further rates support for post offices.

“These measures will help secure the future of the Post Office network, and we look forward to working with Government to support high streets across the UK.”

The branch upgrades, Drop Box rollout and expansion of Post Office Plus form part of Post Office’s wider transformation plan to build a stronger, more modern and sustainable network. By modernising branches, creating new services and giving postmasters more opportunities to diversify their businesses, the programmes will help Post Office continue delivering for customers, local businesses, high streets and communities across the country.
