Jamie Stone, MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross “cut the ribbon” (25/10) at the official opening of Ullapool Post Office at the village’s Tesco Superstore.
The branch has opened in the newly refurbished Tesco Supermarket at Latheron Lane, Ullapool, Ross-Shire, IV26 2XB.
A community celebration was held to mark the important return of a permanent, full-time Post Office to this rural Highland village.
Here people can do their banking on behalf of all the major banks, send and collect parcels, do home shopping returns, pay their bills, tax their vehicles and get Euros and Dollars on demand and pre-order other currencies, plus many other services.
A temporary branch had been operating at Ullapool Village Hall until March when the temporary postmaster resigned. Then, an interim, part-time, Mobile Post Office service visited Ullapool to help to maintain services to the community until the new-look Tesco Superstore was ready to operate Ullapool Post Office.
Jamie Stone, MP, said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be performing the official opening of Ullapool Post Office. It is in a great location at the Tesco Superstore where most residents would shop. Now they can do their Post Office transactions under the same roof.
“Ullapool is a close-knit, rural, community and a Post Office is essential as it’s a 40-minute drive to the nearest alternative branch. I want to sincerely thank Tesco for taking on Ullapool Post Office. The residents and business of Ullapool are very relieved to have a Post Office on their doorstep again and it’s very handy for the tourists too.
“It’s great news as the Tesco Superstore is a permanent, full-time location. Ullapool Post Office is open much longer hours than before, making it much easier to visit.”
The opening hours for Ullapool Post Office at Tesco Superstore are: Monday, Wednesday & Friday: 9am – 5.30pm; Tuesday & Thursday: 9am – 8pm; Saturday: 9.30am – 12.30pm.
This provides 50 hours and 30 minutes of Post Office service a week for the convenience of customers.
Daniel Rooney, Post Office Partner Account Manager, said: “We know how important a Post Office is to this remote community. We are very pleased to have restored a full-time, permanent Post Office to this village at the Tesco Superstore – this will work really well.
“We also want to thank the postmaster for Dingwall for providing a temporary Mobile Post Office for as long as they could for a stop-gap service.”
