Postmaster Tarsem Rela has marked his 50 years’ milestone with four decades at Kingsley Park Post Office, after 10 years as a postmaster in London before moving to Northampton.
Tarsem began working for the General Post Office as a telephone operator, which he did for 10 years, so he has worked in the Post Office industry for 60 years.
He then decided to take on his own business – Dulwich Post Office in London.
Then in 1984, Tarsem and his wife, Kusam, decided to move to Northampton - an area that they did not know. They took on Kingsley Park Post Office and they have no regrets about moving to the area.
During Covid Tarsem needed to shield for health reasons, but his middle son, Ravinder Rela, and his manager, Harpreet Singh Mynhas, kept open the Post Office and shop at 2 Kingsley Park Terrace, Northampton, NN2 7HG, to maintain vital Post Office services to the community.
Due to cataracts Tarsem can no longer serve at his branch. He really misses his customers and he often pops in just to chat to people from his community that he has got to know so well over the past 40 years.
Postmaster, Tarsem Rela, said: “I have really enjoyed working at Kingsley Park Post Office. I have lovely customers and I miss seeing them all the time now, so I still pop into the branch when I can, just to catch up with my customers.”
With his semi-retirement he now has more time to care for his wife and to relax as well as gardening.
Post Office Area Manager, Karen McIlroy, said: “I want to sincerely thank Tarsem for serving Kingsley Park Post Office customers for four decades. Fifty years as a Postmaster is impressive. Tarsem is very kind, caring and chatty, so I can see why he’s always been popular with his customers and he is very knowledgeable about Post Office services too.”
