Tommy Morris who has served customers at Phillipstown Post Office for more than half a century has retired just before his 80th birthday.
For the past 45 years Tommy has been Postmaster for Phillipstown, the village where he has lived all of his life.
His Mother, Ruby, was the Postmistress before him for more than five years. Phillipstown Post Office was added to their family home in Derlwyn Road.
However, it was Tommy who has run the branch for more than 50 years, including throughout the pandemic.
Sadly, Tommy had an accident in January and broke his hip. Phillipstown Post Office and the shop selling clothing and gifts has been temporarily closed since then, whilst we looked to relocate the branch.
Tommy is now officially retiring and on Monday 12 August Phillipstown Post Office opens a nearby location - 34 Jones Street, Phillipstown, New Tredegar, NP24 6BB, with a new postmaster.
Phillipstown postmaster, Tommy Morris, said: “I know everyone in the village as I was born and bred in Phillipstown and I have served the community since I was in my twenties.
“I have really enjoyed being a postmaster. I love the interaction with the customers. I know people so well. I will 80 in a couple of months and with recovering from my broken hip it is time to retire. I am pleased that a Post Office is opening again in Phillipstown as a Post Office offers so many vital services.”
Post Office Area Manager, Ceri James, said: “I first covered Philipstown in 1993 so I have known Tommy Morris for 31 years. He’s a great bloke and I will miss him very much.
“Tommy has served this community so well for more than five decades. Such a shame that his days serving his customers were curtailed by his accident. I wish him a very well-earned retirement.
“I am delighted that we have a new Postmaster taking over Phillipstown branch, which will restore Post Office services.”
The new Phillipstown Post Office will be a new-style local style branch with Post Office services alongside the retail and throughout the opening hours of the convenience store.
The new opening hours will be Monday to Saturday: 7am – 10pm; Sunday: 8am – 9pm.
This will offer 103 hours of Post Office service a week compared with the previous weekday mornings opening hours. This will be an extra 83 hours of Post Office service a week for the convenience of customers.
