Postmistress Irene Dalgleish has reached her 30 years milestone for running Trenchard Lines Post Office in Wiltshire.
Irene has provided Post Office services to people living and working on the Trenchard Lines Army base, but she’s also been a good listener to people from the armed forces and their families.
Irene, who lives locally, took on the part-time Postmistress role in September 1994, providing services to the army community on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. It is inside the garrison and not open to the general public.
Trenchard Lines is in the “wilds of Wiltshire” as Irene described it. Having a Post Office on their door step allows them to send parcels home and abroad, do home shopping returns, withdraw free cash and to banking on behalf of all the high street banks and to organise mail redirections if they are moving.
Postmistress, Irene Dalgleish, said: “The best things about being a postmistress is serving people. As it is on an army base people experience a real mix of emotions. There can be sadness and concerns from the families of army personnel deployed abroad or you can see and hear the joy of families being reunited, or them making plans for their whole family being relocated to a new location.
“Sometimes people like to talk to someone that is not emotionally involved with them or their family. I’m a good listener, I’m not there to give advice, but by them talking to someone like me can help them.”
A Post Office 30 Years’ Post Office Long Service Award has been presented to Irene by Post Office Regional Manager, Debbie Mickleborough and Post Office Area Manager, Rachel Chidgey.
Rachel Chidgey, said: “Irene has been at the heart of this army community at Trenchard Lines for 30 years. I want to sincerely thank Irene for running this branch for the past three decades and is greatly appreciated by the people who live and work at the army garrison.”
