Post Office is supporting the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) appeal following the Myanmar earthquake.
Members of the public will be able to donate to the Myanmar Earthquake Appeal at any of Post Office’s 11,500 branches and Payzone counters across the UK.
On Friday 28 March, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar causing major destruction to buildings, roads, water and power supplies. Since the earthquake, and as of today, 3,085 people are confirmed to have died, and a further 4,715 people are injured. More widely, 1.2 million people have been displaced.
The DEC brings together 15 leading UK humanitarian charities to raise funds quickly and efficiently at times of crisis overseas.
DEC charities are already on the ground in affected communities and are working hard to access remote areas. They urgently need more funding to scale up their work and reach the most vulnerable with safe shelter, clean water, food and medical supplies.
Post Office is a proud partner of the Disasters Emergency Committee, enabling anyone to donate via cash or card in branches across its network.
The UK Government will match £ for £ up to £5 million donated by the public to this appeal.
Mark Cazaly, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at Post Office, commented: “It has been shocking to see the terrible destruction caused by the earthquake in Myanmar. Post Office is joining the Disasters Emergency Committee Myanmar Earthquake Appeal which means that anyone will be able to visit their local Post Office branch to donate much needed funds to support those who have been impacted.”
Saleh Saeed, Chief Executive of Disasters Emergency Committee, said: “The devastation in Myanmar is heartbreaking, with thousands of people suddenly losing loved ones in the most shocking of ways...We know that money is tight for many people here in the UK as the cost-of-living crisis continues, but if you can, please do donate to support the hundreds of thousands of people, children and families caught up in this deadly disaster.”
