MP opens new Dwygyflchi Post Office

Claire Hughes MP for Bangor Aberconwy “cut the ribbon” today (6/10) to mark the official opening of Dwygyfylchi Post Office.

The branch is at Treforris Superstore, Premier, Treforris Road, Dwygyfylchi, Penmaenmawr, Conwy, LL34 6UB and it replaces the former Penmaenmawr Post Office to restore a full-time branch to the area.

The new owners are Kamal Thillainathan and Jeynaithi Kamalanathan, who are very experienced as they have run Penygroes Post Office for the past eight years. Jeynaithi continues to run their Penygroes shop.

A community celebration with refreshments for customers was held to mark the new, permanent, full-time Post Office in Dwygyfylchi. The MP, Penmaenmawr Town Mayor Cllr Steven Consterdine and Conwy County Borough Cllr Cathy Augustine, who represents Penmaenmawr ward, attended the occasion.

In 2023 the couple took on the Treforris Superstore. Initially they opened a lighter format Post Office drop and collect branch offering pre-paid mail services. Then there was the opportunity to open a full-time Post Office in Dwygyfylchi to replace the temporary part-time Mobile Post Office service in Penmaenmawr, with a permanent, full-time service.

The couple undertook a full refit to modernise the store into a Premier convenience store with a wider retail range and to add a Post Office counter. Extra Post Office services including everyday banking, sending parcels, bill payments and vehicle tax renewal.

Claire Hughes MP said: “I’m delighted to open Dwygyfylchi Post Office which offers a very convenient full-time service to the community. I want to thank Kamal Thillainathan and Jeynaithi Kamalanathan, who are already experienced at running Post Office, for their investment into this modern new-look store and permanent Post Office. I know that the community really appreciates this.

The Post Office opening hours are Monday to Friday: 8am – 8pm; Saturday: 8am – 1pm. This provides 65 hours of Post Office service a week. The store is open daily until 9pm.
Dwygyfylchi Postmaster, Kamal Thillainathan, said: “Customers from Dwygyfylchi and Penmaenmawr are really happy that they have a full-time Post Office again as it is more convenient to visit.

There are no banks in the area and businesses and residents are pleased to be able to do their everyday banking here too. There are two caravan parks here and its very convenient for visitors too. It’s a very easy for people to send mail, home shopping returns and to collect parcels.

Originally from Sri Lanka, Kamal and Jeynaithi, who have lived in Wales for eight years, are both learning Welsh. Their children are attending a Welsh-language school where they learn Welsh and English.

Kamal runs the Dwygyfylchi Post Office and Premier store with the help of his staff, Hantrika Onasn and Supas Kovitnarasna, who are husband and wife.

Vicky Gill, Post Office Area Change Manager, said: “We know how important a Post Office is to a community and we are delighted to have restored a permanent, full-time branch in Dwygyfylchi serving the needs of the wider community including Penmaenmawr.
